Let’s examine how cellphones affect sleep, a crucial foundation of good health at any age. Using your phone late at night exposes your brain to bright, stimulating light and keeps your mind actively engaged when it should be winding down. Poor sleep not only causes fatigue but also impairs memory, mood, balance, and even pain perception.

To improve rest, avoid using your phone at least an hour before bedtime, and resist the urge to check it if you wake during the night or early morning. Ideally, keep your cellphone away from your bed, though this can be challenging as many people have given up landlines. At minimum, turn off notifications before sleeping.

Physical pain is another real consequence of cellphone overuse. After consulting a hand surgeon, I began asking patients about hand and thumb pain. Constantly holding, scrolling, and texting can worsen pain at the base of the thumb and throughout the hand. While phones may not cause arthritis, they can certainly aggravate it.

Falls are a significant health risk for older adults, and being absorbed in a screen while moving is genuinely dangerous. I often see people of all ages, including those using canes, crossing busy streets while staring at their phones instead of paying attention to traffic.

Heavy cellphone use also affects posture, causing forward-leaning neck, slouching, and rounded shoulders. Maintaining upright posture helps balance and reduces fall risk. Since reaction time naturally slows with age, distractions like phones increase the chance of falling. I advise my patients to ensure they are stable before answering calls or simply let calls go to voicemail and listen later.

I'm not against phones. Rather, I caution against letting a device take over your body, mind, and daily life. Used wisely, smartphones keep you engaged; used compulsively, they can steal your sleep, strain your hands, cloud your thinking, and put you at physical risk. Let your phone serve you, not the other way around.
